How to Manage Dental Erosian Caused by Everyday Beverages

On a recent article that I read on science daily.com I learned what can be done when acidic beverages have caused damage to your teeth.

There was a recent study that appeared in the May/June 2009 issue of General Dentistry, that showed the outlined acidic contents of beverages like soda, grapefruit, orange juice, etc. This also gave us three steps to rehabilitate teeth that suffer from dental erosion as a result of the excessive consumption of these products.

Photobucket

The three steps are :

First Identify the problem (Usually, would need the help of a dental professional)
Second Understand how this can cause damage to your teeth
Third Minimize consumption of this beverage/food

Now you might be wondering, "Well, What is Dental Erosion?" Dental Erosion is a demineralization process that affects hard dental tissues (like your enamel or your dentin). This will eventually cause your tooth structure to wear away due to the effects that acid has on teeth.

Some people done even realize a problem exists in their teeth is actually early signs of dental erosion.

This is just another reason why visiting your dentist twice a year can help maintain healthy teeth as well as uncover and prevent future problems.

Healthy Mouth, Healthy Body

Did you know that your mouth is a window into the health of your body?
It can show signs of nutritional deficiencies or general infection.

There are several studies that link chronic inflammation from periodontitis, which is an advanced form of periodontal disease that can cause tooth loss, with the development of cardiovascular problems. There are some evidence that even suggests that oral bacteria may be linked to heart disease, arterial blockage, and stroke!!! People with Diabetes often have periodontal disease as well.

So What Can You Do?

-Make sure you brush your teeth twice a day. Clean in between your teeth with floss, and a mouth wash

-Eating a balanced diet and limiting snacks can prevent tooth decay

-Make sure you are scheduled for your routine dental check ups and cleanings. Professional cleanings are the only way to remove calculus (tartar), which traps plaque bacteria along the gum line.

If you notice any of these signs, see your dentist:

- gums are bleeding during brushing and flossing
- if your gums are red, swollen, and tender
- if your gums are pulled away from your teeth
- if you have continuous bad breathe
- if there is pus between your teeth and gums
- separating teeth

Need Holiday Gift Ideas?

As the holidays approach, you may be searching for the perfect gift for your friend, child, mom, dad, etc. Why not give them something to smile about?

For example:

You can give your child a bucket full of cartoon animated toothbrushes, toothpaste, and towels. This can encourage them to WANT to brush their teeth more often

You can give an Adult some travel – size toothbrushes and toothpastes. Obviously since it’s the holiday season, I am positive they will be using those gifts right away!

You might even encourage a teenager to brush their teeth by surprising them with a brand new power toothbrush!

Here are some reminders:

Toothpastes: toothpastes that contain the ADA seal of acceptance contain fluoride to help prevent tooth decay!

Toothbrushes: Manuel tooth brushes should be replaced every three to four months or sooner.

Dental Floss: dental floss will help remove plaque and debris that are collected between your teeth and under your gum line

Mouth Rinses: these can be cosmetic or therapeutic. These can help “refresh” or can contain fluoride for decay prevention, or even have active ingredients that help reduce plaque and gingivitis.

If you need more assistance with your holiday shopping please call our office today at All Bright Dental (702) 220-8046. Dr. Mohtashami and staff have a variety of different services and products to recommend for your special someone this holiday season!

Having A Confident Smile Can Change Everything…

What is Invisalign?
Who wants a straight brilliant smile? Invisalign can do that for you! Invisalign consists of a series of aligners that you change every two weeks. Each aligner is customized to gradually shift your teeth back in to place. The best part of Invisalign isn't just that the treatment is made SPECIFICALLY to meet your needs but Invisalign actually has an extensive list of concerns that it addresses to help impress each patient! You would really be amazed at how Invisalign can transform your smile.

Here are a few things that Invisalign can handle:
**** Overly Crowded Teeth
**** Widely Spaced Teeth
**** Cross bite – occurs when upper and lower jaw are misaligned
**** Overbite – this can actually lead to gum problems/irritation and much more
**** Underbite – occurs when the lower teeth extend beyond the front teeth

If these are some of your concerns, Invisalign might be right for you! Just see what these patients have to say….

I'm so glad I made the investment to go with aligners rather than metal braces. I've heard stories of people having food stuck in their metal braces, and I didn't want to go through that. It's so easy—all I have to do is remove my aligners when I eat.

I always wanted to have straight teeth, but never thought my smile would look this great. Plus, no one even knew when I was wearing them. I couldn't be happier!

At first, I was skeptical about whether or not to use plastic aligners to straighten my teeth, but I am very glad I decided to make the investment. In just about nine months my teeth were straightened using the clear, comfortable, and easy-to-remove aligners. I'm a busy guy, and using Invisalign fit right into my lifestyle.

If you would like to learn more about Invisalign or feel that this might be right for you call our office today at (702)220-8046 to learn more about Invisalign Day and how you can save HUNDREDS off your treatment!

Benefits of MI Paste
* Strengthens your teeth with tooth-replenishing calcium and phosphate
* Releases vital minerals into your mouth when and where they are needed
* Produces a saliva-like environment that maintains normal acid levels and healthy teeth
* RECALDENT™ CPP-ACP is milk derived with lactose content less than 0.01%.*

MI Paste Plus is enhanced with a form of fluoride to further promote remineralization and protect your teeth! Also, it works in conjunction with Recaldent so this actually helps more than fluoride.
